Who Is Bill Gates?

Entrepreneur, Businessman, an American business magnate ‘Bill Gates’ founded and built the world's largest software business, Microsoft, through helpful technological innovation, keen business strategies, and aggressive business tactics.

In the process, Gates became one of the richest men on the planet. In February 2014, Gates announced that he was stepping down as Microsoft's chairman to pay more attention to charitable work at his foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Education and Early Life

Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in a beautiful city of Washington, Seattle. Gates grew up in an upper-middle-class family.

His father, William H. Gates was a law student when he met his future wife, Mary Maxwell. She was a brilliant athletic, outgoing student at the University of Washington, actively involved in student affairs and leadership.

Gates was an excellent reader as a child, spending many hours poring over good reference books such as the encyclopedia.

Though his parents were strong believers in public education, when Gates turned 13, they enrolled him at Seattle's exclusive preparatory Lakeside School.

Gates and Computer Softwares

While at Lakeside School, a well known Seattle computer company offered to provide computer time for the students.

The Mother's Club used proceeds from the school's rummage sale to purchase a teletype terminal for students to learn and know something new. Gates became highly excited after knowing what a computer could do and spent much of his free time working on the terminal.

He wrote a tic-tac-toe program in a BASIC computer language that allowed users to play against the computer.

That’s how his journey from a software engineer to an entrepreneur actually began.

Which College gave the Knowledge Boost to Gates?

Gates enrolled at Harvard University in the mid of 1973, originally thinking of a career in the law and order field. Much to his respectful parents' dismay, Gates dropped out of college in 1975 to pursue his dream business, Microsoft, with friends and later partner Allen.

Gates spent more of his time in the computer lab doing coding than in class. He did not really have a study regimen for memory empowerment; he got by on a couple of hours of sleep, crammed for a test, and passed with a reasonable grade.

How Microsoft became the most dominant Company in the World?

Allen (a friend & partner of Gates) was hired at MITS, and Gates soon left Harvard’s Computer lab to work with him. Together they founded the Microsoft Company.

Allen remained with Microsoft until 1983 when he was diagnosed with a disastrous disease.

In 1975, Gates and Allen formed their dream company named Micro-Soft, a fusion of "microcomputer" and "software" (they dropped the hyphen within a year).

Microsoft's BASIC software became extremely popular with computer hobbyists.

Although the company started out on kind of shaky footing, by 1979 Microsoft was grossing more than $2.5 million. At the age of 23, Gates brilliantly placed himself as the head of the company.

With his acumen for software development and also a keen business sense, he led the company and worked as a spokesperson. Gates personally reviewed each and every line of code the company shipped, often rewriting code himself whenever he saw it necessary.

Following the development of software for IBM, between 1979 and 1981 Microsoft's growth exploded exponentially. Staff increased from 25 to 128, and revenue raised up from $2.5 million to $16 million. And till the date of Today, his net wealth is more than 110 Billion USD.

Gates has received a number of glorious awards for philanthropic work.

Time magazine named Gates one of the most influential people of the 20th century. The magazine also named Gates and his wife Melinda as the 2005 Persons of the Year.

He was knighted as an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005.

In 2006, Gates and his wife were awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle by the Mexican government for their philanthropic work throughout the world in the areas of health and education.

In 2016, the couple was again recognized for their work Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
